Foundations

In the photo, on the left, are the poles which will serve as my barn’s foundation. The large timbers are buried deep in the earth, attached to concrete blocks. Surrounded by trees, whose roots also run deep, my barn will grow.

As I think about working with beginning riders, I am reminded of the importance of the fundamentals…the foundation! Any one can hop on a horse and make it move; maybe even make it move quickly. However, a true “equestrian” develops a foundation first. Riding begins on the ground and grows from there. Partnership with the horse, learning to listen to each other while riding, begins before you even put on the saddle. After all, the better the foundation, the higher you can build!
